On August 22, 2021, class 8 students of the Palpung Sherabling Monastic Primary School completed the five-month meditation retreat based on the preliminary practices of Mahamudra, which is part of the school’s curriculum. During the retreat, which took place at the monastic seat’s Shangpa Retreat Center, the students practiced the twelve preliminary meditations of Mahamudra, the essence of all sutras, tantras, and pith instructions, which comprised the practices of common preliminaries—the four thoughts that turn the mind away from samsara, one hundred thousand accumulations of each of the four extraordinary preliminaries, and the meditations on the four conditions that constitute the four special preliminaries. At the conclusion of the retreat, Kyabje Chungpo Gyalton Rinpoche presided over a ganachakra feast based on the guru sadhana of Lord Marpa Lotsawa, the king among translators, and gave a teaching to the retreatants.
