Khenpo Dhondrup Tashi was born in Nangchen, Kham in 1970. Before the age of 8 years, he learned languages from his parents. At age 12, he was tonsured by Gachen Rinpoche, and entered tong nak la chen Monastery to learn ritual practices, Buddhist music and dances etc. At age 17, he participated the three-year retreat. Afterwards he experienced more extraordinary insight about Guru Yoga, Six Yogas of Naropa and mahamudra teachings.

At his 21st, he entered Dzongsar Monastic College, studied Five Treatises of Maitrey, Hetu-vidya, Abhidharmakosha and Prajna under Khenpo Pema Dhamchoe and Khenpo Phuntsok Namgyal for four years. At the age of 24 years, he went to Palpung Monastery and studied all the teachings he had learned again under Khenpo Shonnu Nyima. During his study, he was assigned as the discipline master and assistant teacher of Palpung monastic college. Afterwards he became the main teacher of Palpung monastic college for 3 years. At the age of 26 years, he entered Drepung Monastery and studied dialectics, Prajna, Hetu-vidya under Choephel Namgyal, Phuntosk Tashi, Losang Gelek and Thubten Dhamchoe. He attended an academic debate of Gelukpa school and was thought mastering in Pramana-varttika. He also learned tantras from Troru Tsenam. Then he took the full ordination vows from the12th Kenting tai situpa, Bodhisattva vows form Lamrin Rinpoche of Drepung Monastery and Vajrayana vows from Tsangsa Rinpoche.

At his 29th, he was appointed the president and professor of Monastic College of Palpung monastery by the Kenting Tai Situpa.

In 2003, he went to India on pilgrimages, and was appointed by the Kenting Tai Situpa the chief Khenpo of Palpung monastic college till now.
