Khenpo Losang Tenzin (Loten) was born in Derge, Kham in 1965 to a family of farmers. He went to school and helped on the farm until he was 14, then he ran away from home to make a pilgrimage and especially to visit the great monastery of Gaden. There he became a monk and remained for 7 months until he returned to Derge in 1978, at the repeated requests of his parents, where he studied under many teachers.

In 1985 he escaped to India to further his education, and he joined Dzongsar Shedra in Bir, (a Sakyapa monks college in a Tibetan Colony near to Sherab Ling), where he studied for ten years under Khenchen Kunga Wangchuk Rinpoche (three of which he was Kyorpon, revision master or assistant teacher). In 1994 he was enthroned as a Khenpo at the Dzongsar Institute, and he taught there for a year during which time he was also a tutor to Mingyur Rinpoche.

In 1995 Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche and Khenchen Kunga Wangchuk Rinpoche sent Khenpo Loten to Palpung Sherabling at the request of the Palpung Sherab Ling, where he helped revive the Lungrig Jampal Ling Institute of Buddhist Higher Studies and taught there for 5 years.

Khenpo went to Taiwan in 2001 and stayed there learning Chinese, Chinese Buddhism and translating Tibetan Texts into Chinese for Dharma Drum Mountain.
